Greece will build a fence with concertina wire on the border with Turkey, the length of the new border fence will be about 140 km. The new razor wire fence should close the entire European border with Turkey. This is done in order to contain the flow of migrants who are sent from Turkey to the EU. First, the first section of the 35 km long razor wire fence will be erected, and then the construction of the fence will continue until the entire border with Turkey is blocked.
The total length of the border between Turkey and Greece is approximately 200 km. Most of the border runs along the Evros River, but there are sections that need to be fenced off. Greece has previously installed a concrete fence and concertina wire on the Turkish border, the fence was installed in 2012 and significantly expanded in 2021. And although most of the border runs along the Evros River, experts do not consider it a sufficient obstacle for migrants. For this reason, a fence and Egoza razor wire will be installed on all sections of the border where the terrain allows illegal migrants to cross it.
