Hungary Built a Barbed Wire Fence, but the Country Needs Migrants

Hungary built a barbed wire fence

Hungary is one of the countries that most strongly opposed the European Union's decision to accept a certain quota of immigrants who left their countries as a result of the war. To stop the huge flow of migrants, Hungary was one of the first to build a barbed wire fence more than 150 km long. This action has caused much criticism from international human rights organizations, but despite this, Hungary has not backed down. The country has even jailed some immigrants who tried to enter the country illegally.

But now that Hungary has fewer workers, the state is now thinking about inviting migrants who will have the right to stay and work in the country for a certain number of years, but will not have citizenship rights. Hungary's economy minister has backed a request from the Confederation of Workers and Industrialists to allow thousands of immigrants from non-EU countries to come to Hungary. The country is estimated to need tens of thousands of immigrants to help alleviate labor shortages and halt economic contraction. But according to the bill, the country is looking for skilled, culturally integrated and friendly workers. This means Muslims are not welcome. Experts say the government is trying to avoid a backlash by excluding people it deems culturally unintegrated.
